Bioinformatics Intern

Job Summary:

Zymo Research is looking for a motivated individual to intern with our Bioinformatics department. This is an exciting opportunity to explore the impact of cutting-edge methods, technologies, and applications in the fields of bioinformatics and microbiomics.  

Zymo's expertise in microbiomics research and bioinformatics pipelines will serve as the foundation for the intern's work. The intern will have opportunities to work with scientists in microbiology and bioinformatics to contribute meaningfully to analysis workflows.

The ideal candidate should be a self-motivated learner, an effective team player, and possess a strong interest in learning about bioinformatics. Interns will be expected to test bioinformatics methods, deliver high-quality code, collaborate with cross-functional, and work with real data I cutting-edge research. The hands-on experience gained will be invaluable, grounded in the real-world application of bioinformatics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Test various bioinformatics tools and software according to scientist’s suggestions. Make notes of resource requirements, input, and output formats, evaluate performance of such tools.
  • Write code in Python, R, Nextflow and Linux code to add select tools to our bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Test code and pipelines rigorously with different data to ensure stability and quality.
  • Conduct statistical analysis to interpret results from our pipelines.
  • Compare results against benchmark data and methods.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all development, testing, debugging and analysis.
  • Research new methods and publications, offer suggestions and participate in scientific discussions.

 Education and Experience:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Microbiology, or a related field.
  • Solid academic foundation with coursework in bioinformatics.
  • Proficiency with Python or R. Experience with working with data in the Linux environment.
  • Experience with pipeline or workflow development, especially Nextflow pipelines, is a plus.
  • Experience with Next-Generation Sequencing data analysis related to microbiomes is a plus.
  • Previous internship experience in bioinformatics is a plus.

Compensation:

The estimated base compensation range for this position is $20 per hour at the time of posting. Actual compensation details will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors.
